Man your Browser!

I've been spending more and more time on smaller laptops and netbooks. I recently gave the Chromium web browser a try, and I must say that as of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Chromium has totally won my heart! It's quite efficient, snappy, and user-friendly.

It took me a little while to learn some of the ins and outs, but I think I've replaced all of the functionality I needed from Firefox.

The most useful feature I've found are Chromium's custom "search engines". Here, I'll demonstrate how to add a custom manpages.ubuntu.com to Chromium's search engines, such that you can type something like "man kvm" in your browser's URL bar, and go straight to the HTML rendering of the kvm manpage!

Basically:
  1. Click on the wrench in the upper right corner
  2. Select Options
  3. Click Manage near the Default Search option
  4. Click Add
  5. Name: Manpages
  6. Keyword: man
  7. URL: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/%s
  8. Click Add
  9. In the browser, ctrl-L to goto the URL bar
  10. Enter man kvm
And you win!

I actually use several of these every single day...
  • man
    http://manpages.ubuntu.com/%s
  • ls

  1. I do indeed love Chromium and have switched to it, but I think it's funny that you mention this feature specifically, as it is unfortunately much more awkward to do in Chromium (I find). In Firefox you could just create a bookmark as normal and give it a keyword, but in Chromium you have to go through kind of a tedious flow to get to it, and plenty of keyword bookmarks don't make conceptual sense as "search engines".

Chromium is really developing at a rapid pace though, so I'm looking forward to more bookmark features like keywords and tags perhaps in the future. I love in the recent dailies the new consolidated menu (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/07/chromiums-unified-menu-great-idea-sucks.html).

  2. Wow! I switched to Chrome a while ago and had no idea you could do something like this. I wonder how many other awesome features I am oblivious to. Thanks for this great tip!

  6. Thanks for the tip. You will find though that it will also automatically set certain frequently visited sites to search. I don't know if it does it to all sites I frequent or just a certain set. But after going a few times, when I start to enter the domain Chrome will suggest that I hit tab to search the site and There ya go:)

  7. This is indeed useful, though Firefox has had an equivalent feature for years. :-)

  8. Right Matt, and I've used that feature from Firefox for years!

This was one of the main features in Chromium that I had to discover to be as functional in Chromium as I traditionally have been in Firefox.
