UEC at the Texas Linux Fest

Take a close look at this beautiful image by John Rogers of the Austin skyline ... Do you see some purple? Maybe some orange? How about a few clouds? Reminds me a bit of the new Ubuntu color scheme...

Well the Texas Linux Fest committee has accepted my proposal to demo the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud!

So if you're interested in seeing a demonstration of the 10.04 LTS Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud in action, join me in Austin, Texas on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the first ever Texas Linux Fest.

In my presentation, I will use:
  • One free Ubuntu Server ISO (10.04 Beta2 64-bit) burned to a USB stick
  • Two laptops, and
  • Twenty Minutes
And you will witness the ease of deploying an Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC), Canonical's open source implementation of an Amazon EC2-compatible cloud that you can run locally, in your own data center and on your own hardware.

In this presentation, you will learn about the UEC, Eucalyptus, Cloud topologies, the installation process, registering nodes, running and terminating instances in the Cloud, and the UEC Image Store.
Bring a blank 1GB+ USB key and I'll even burn you a copy of the same ISO I use in my presentation.
Cloud Computing is here, and Ubuntu is a phenomenal platform on which you can construct your private Cloud today. Since 2004, Ubuntu has revolutionized the Linux desktop. Attend this session and learn how Ubuntu is changing the landscape of the Linux server.

  1. Is there (or will there be) a succinct listing of available UEC appliance images for purchase/download that is viewable from outside the dedicated UEC web interface? Or is the only way to view the available images the UEC web interface once an UEC controller is installed on premises?

For example, both Jumpbox and Turnkey Linux (both Ubuntu derivatives) do a a reasonably good job of providing a browsable catalogue of their appliance offerings on their websites. Is Canonical going to offer that sort of browsable catalogue of preconfigured ISV appliances as they become available in the UEC store?

  2. Great question, Jef. I honestly have no idea.

I'll poke someone who can answer this question and point them here, or I'll track down a link.

  3. Jef,

We'll definitely have a way for people to contribute their appliances in a way that is both more visible and more usable in the near future.

There's on going research in that area right now, and we hope to get to some basic agreements and to open up the discussion and development for contributions in the very near future.

If you have interest in the area or any further questions, please subscribe to the ubuntu-cloud mailing list. It'll certainly be maintained up-to-date with anything interesting that is happening in this area.

  4. Gustavo,
That's good to know. If Dustin is going to do a presentation in April, it would be wise to have some sort of EUC image catalogue up on the web for the audience to browse at their leisure.

  5. Hey Dustin,
Although it may be a bit self serving, I've got to agree with you about the beautiful image. I'm the photographer. Linuxfest is kinda pushing the edge of the non-commercial part of the Creative Commons license... No worries, anyone that starts a blog post with "Take a close look at this beautiful image..." is OK with me.

  6. Hi John!

I just updated the top of the post to note that you took the picture, and link to your website.

It most certainly is a beautiful picture (and I took a brief look at some of your other work -- excellent stuff)!

If you're bothered by the LinuxFest's usage, I suggest you contact the organizers. They're quite reasonable guys. I suspect you can come to some arrangement ;-)

    Cheers,
